Go easy on him judge he's currently the longest serving U.S. Senator. Yesterday Ted " the internet is a series of tubes" Stevens was found guilty on all counts related to his indictment for public corruption. Uncle Ted, Big Oil's Manchurian candidate shows us that it's not the kickbacks but the lying about kickbacks that always gets you in the end.

Ted is still running for re-election despite the conviction. Unfortunately for him Alaska law prohibits Ted from voting for himself.

49 Nifty United States

Sarah Palin has completely degenerated into self parody at this point in the race.  Could it be any more obvious that she serves no other purpose than to rile up the base at those creepy-ass rallies?  By now the media cycle has been permeated with this one liner:

"This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America..."

We sadly know the rest by now.  I wouldn't expect the MSM not to pick up this meme and repeat it,that's what they do.  What sticks in my craw is that I have yet to see one outlet at least come back and mention Saracuda's association with the secessionist Alaskan Independence Party.  When she says " the way you and I see America", does she mean one with only forty nine states?  Could at least one crummy news publication or cable show at least bring this up, just once?

Charlie Gibson for a Day

The much awaited unveiling of Sarah Palin to the news media will begin tonight in a multi-part interview with Charlie Gibson. Now that the time of her confinement is over we can expect candidate Palin to offer up her real views on the most pressing policy questions of this election.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't think this won't be more than a " Meet the Palins" type affair? Fox News already ran one of these specials and CNN is planning to release one soon. The Associated Press has a story that touches on how ABC will package and commodify the Gibson interview into bite size ratings friendly pieces.

Gibson is having three separate interviews with Palin, ABC said. Parts of the interviews will be spread around other ABC news programs, including "Nightline" and "Good Morning America."

I'm not holding out for a hard hitting Russertesque scrubbing of her record but I can still dream. If ABC News sent the Bizarro Charlie Gibson to Alaska to interview Bizarro Hillary he would do the opposite of the real Gibson and ask hard questions that aren't about hockey or lipstick. Here are some of the questions in backwards order and quasi-Bizarro speak:

7. Will you try to have minutes of top secret Cheney Energy Task Force meetings released to the public? Why do you hate polar bears?

6. What should U.S. military do to reclaim control of Afghanistan? What is capital of Afghanistan?

5. Me want to know what contributions or edits you made to Op-ed piece on the GSE bailout that was in Wall Street Journal? Do you want to correct your statements about them being tax payer funded?

4. Me want to see if you know what the Fourth amendment (of U.S Constitution) says in regards to warrantless wiretapping. Would you ask a President McCain to revisit the FISA Reauthorization of 2008?

3. How many signing statements is too many? 800? 900?

2. How soon after December 2008 do Iraq have provincial elections? Me want to know if you think a referrendum on the status of the city of Kirkuk should be included in elections? Do you even know what that means?

1. Do you think me sexy?

Noun Verb Lie

I didn't think anyone could have topped the 2004 Zell Miller speech when it came to shear lunacy and a complete lack of sophistication. That feat was accomplished tonight by Rudy Giuliani's speech to the RNC. It will definitely hold a spot in the annals of GOP red meat.

A very effective delivery of insults, and lies all done with that artful lisp. Not bad for a guy who spent $48.8 million to win one lousy delegate. I also found his charges of sexism by the media ironic considering his record of marital infidelity.

Laura On George

Someone had to do it. Laura Bush was given the distinct honor of introducing her husband the Prez to the RNC tonight. I was curious to see what accomplishments she would highlight. She offered up the usual references to No Child Left Behind, African Aids Relief (PEPFAR) and some others.

There was no avoiding Iraq or Afghanistan so she used broad strokes when it came to this chapter in the Bush presidency:

"In Afghanistan and Iraq 50 milllion people are now living in freedom"

Yes freedom is certainly on the march. This report from the BBC today updates the story of a 23 year old Afghani student condemned to death for downloading an article about women and Islam from the internet.

I suggest the next president dust off copies of the books Ghost Wars and Imperial Hubris and read up on the region that will be occupying most of their time while in office.

Meet Bizarro Hillary

John McCain the maverick is back and has defied convention and the odds makers by picking Alaska governor Sarah Palin to join him on the GOP ticket. There are some risks with this pick but, it could be a brilliant move or come off as exceedingly calculated and condescending to voters. The McCain campaign certainly must be aware of the danger but had to weigh those risks against the long shot chance of winning this election. Defying convention with Palin is one way to shake up the race and create their own fate. I agree with Ed Shultz, it has the feel of a Hail Mary pass. It is telling about how hard they think it's going to be to win the election.

IOKIYAR Alert

Obviously her lack of experience in Washington in the foreign policy milieu is going to be hard to shake. Andrew Sullivan makes a good case for
not going the Palin route at the Daily Dish:

The first criterion for a veep - and I'm simply repeating a truism here
- is that they are ready to take over at a moment's notice. That's
especially true when you have a candidate as old as McCain. That's more than especially true when we are at war, in an era of astonishingly difficult challenges, when the next president could be grappling with war in the Middle East or a catastrophic terror attack at home. Under those circumstances, we could have a former Miss Alaska with two terms years under her belt as governor.

There's no easy way to predict what the McCain handlers were thinking. Here are some reasons that the McCain people must have used to rationalize the Palin pick:

The Bizarro Hillary

Attract the legions of disaffected Hillary supporters that supposedly have left the Democratic party. Have these guys read the latest polls? The massive carve out of Hillary supporters heading for the McCain camp looks more and more like a media concoction built up to attract
eyeballs to cable news channels. How many pant suits does this women have? She will need a lot of them to pull of the Hillary switcharoo if that's what she plans to do.

A Biden Factor

A perceived vulnerability of Biden by McCain could be a factor in selecting Gov. Palin. He will easily demonstrate his gigantic advantage in foreign policy over Palin during the VP debate. Biden has legendary loose lips and they may perceive a slight chance that he could mutter something condescending or rood during the debate. The echo chamber would cycle such caddy behavior and pull Biden down with it. On the other hand he may try to hold back and not completely school her to avoid looking like a jerk.

Bucking Party Orthodoxy - To a Degree

Palin has the appropriate bona fides. She is of course a pro-life evangelical, a lifetime member of the NRA, an advocate of small government, anti-earmarks, pro-drill-the-shit-out-of-everywhere and a defense hawk (how can you tell). She does however support some rights of gay couples, is an advocate of energy diversification and likes basketball. I think the McCain camp realizes the Republican brand is in shambles and introducing a female VP pick that has a mavericky edge like him could be effective in attracting independent and swing voters. This may not be 100% amiable to the GOP faithful but they will fall in line in the end of this pick pays off.

As much as he annoys me I think Romney would have been a better pick for McCain. He espoused all of the right conservative viewpoints on the primary trail as evidenced by the prattling done over him on right wing radio. He would also give McCain the edge in Michigan. And since he isn't a Washington fixture or a party insider he has some of the outsider cache that today's right wingers thirst for. Apparently the focus group horseshit conducted by Team McCain said otherwise.

Obama certainly has many angles to go after on the Palin VP pick and he should exploit those where possible. In the end I wouldn't underestimate Palin. She has risen in a meteoric fashion to get to the governorship of Alaska. I know it's only Alaska and not a mighty swing state like Ohio or Michigan but, her political achievements like those of Obama have come at a relatively early age which speaks to her determination and savvy.

Ding Ding, It's On

Just watched Barack blow the doors off the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The speech of course was his declaration of a clinch of the nomination and much much more. It was also a clarion call to get everyone off their asses and get ready for the fight ahead.

He didn't hold back when counter punching McCain's earlier speech and made it clear with the numerous swipes at the flaws in the GOP's platform. I especially enjoyed the reference he made to how his campaign will not "use religion as a wedge and patriotism as a bludgeon". It's good to see he's showing some fortitude when it comes to pushing back against the flag lapel pin litmus test antics of the past few moths.

Right now Chris Matthews and Tom Brokaw are obsessing over the "tactile" nature of the Obama's post speech sweep through the arena crowd. Time to call it night boys?

The McCain Conventional Wisdom Takes a Hit

The prevailing conventional wisdom on the McCain candidacy was fatally wounded today. The presumptive GOP nominee for president joined in on the political hit job that was telegraphed all the way from Israel today by the Prez. Any notion that the McCain of 2000 is running a clean and straight talking campaign in 2008 has all but burned up after today's harangue. You can see McCain's rejoinder to the Presidents intentional Nazi appeaser smear of Obama here. Good to see he got the memo and passed it on to Joe Leiberman.

The following bits of of the McCain campaign narrative can be thrown into the dustbin of history, they include but are not limited to:

1. McCain will run a clean campaign and condemn swiftboat style attacks from outside groups.
2. McCain will distance himself from Bush on the campaign trail.
3. McCain will attract disgruntled Hillary Democrats in the General Election.
4. McCain will be the maverick candidate he purported to be in 2000.
   

Using these points to benchmark the presidential campaign as it progresses will help you and your love ones avoid any inconvenient surprises.

McCain Already Opting for Public Funds

John McCain hit the dusty ground of Iraq running by conducting a "fact finding" mission Sunday. This trip didn't appear to have the exorbitant security trappings of his last junket but had the regular hoopla. On the fact finding agenda were meetings with St. Petreaus and Iraqi leaders including his honor president Nouri al Maliki. Just to blur any line between fact finder and campaign stop McCain had Senate colleagues and stalwart Iraq enthusiasts Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham in tow.

The punditry has been keen to point out McCain's advantage over his rival Dem challengers. While Obama and Clinton continue to drag out the nomination process McCain can start assuming a presidential aura and visit important people and kiss important general asses. It's a really smart strategy I'll admit. I'm guessing a sliver of voters have assumed that a transition already took place and he's the new president.

I hope someone at the Federal Elections Commission is paying attention. This trip was clearly a campaign stop at the expense of taxpayers. If the Straight Talk Express is going to opt in for a public campaign funds that's great, he has been a champion of campaign reform right?

McCain just started running a tab barkeep, don't forget to settle before the General Election is over.

Cheney was also in Iraq today. He snarled something about last throes or phenomenal progress. I don't know does anyone even care?

Give McCain Some Credit

McCain faced another "how do we beat the bitch" moment and this time made the right choice. It started when righty talker Bill Cunningham was warming up the crowd at a McCain rally in Cincy today. The rant which targeted Obama, Clinton and even Madeline Albright sounded like a cry for attention in the style of Ann Coulter. Really just standard fare for this species of bloviator.

To his credit John McCain disavowed the whole incident and even went as far to apologize to the media that were present. Yes, apologize for what we have come to know as a common right wing psychopathy. Now I'm sure part of the reaction from McCain was inspired from the constant hits he's taken from the ghouls on right-wing radio but it still showed some altruistic purpose. With both Obama and McCain lobbing snippets of admiration at public gatherings they are at least giving the impression that this general election could be decided mostly on policy questions.

That idea of course minimizes the threat of political hatchet jobs from outside players. You just know lapel pins, patriotism and the pledge will eventually be thrown into the mix from somewhere out in 527 land.

Our primary election hydra sprouts new heads tonight as the returns come rushing in. The (insert superlative here) Tuesday primary bacchanal promises to deliver all sorts of surprises and open up the next phase in the presidential contest. Here are a few observations as we anxiously await for the carnage to begin.

Us and Them
The governing style of each party are characteristically ingrained their primary rules. Dems divide state delegates proportionally and the GOP use a winner take all method. Democratic primary voters living abroad can vote while their GOP counterparts do not have that right. A move I haven’t been able to answer is why the polls in the W.Virginia GOP-only primary close at 12:30 in the afternoon (according to a spread in the Wall Street Journal).

Don’t Bother Parsing Yet
With 24 States and a whole slew of polling data pouring in over the last few days it’s not worth trying to divine any certainty from the numbers. Yeah Barack Star has momentum but there’s way too much going on to be sure of the results. I’ll opt to wait for the dust to clear some time after midnight before I am willing to trust what I see.

Ron Paul Wins AK?
Can the this libertarian in GOP clothing pull off a lone primary win in Alaska? This seems to be his only even remote chance at wining a state.

Right Wing Radio Melts Down – Again.
When McCain wins big tonight I expect the sound of Republicans eating their own to fill the airwaves tomorrow. Rush, Hannity and company have been apoplectic over McCain’s appeal and if he puts Mitt down for the count tonight expect the shrieking to get louder.

Ohio Matters
They like me, they like me, they really like me.

If you believe the conventional wisdom (smart money?) then the democratic race will not be decided tonight. That means the good ol’ buckeye state will land a top spot on Tim Russert’s little white board when the March 4^th primary rolls around. It’s good to relevant.

Where to watch
Aside from the bountiful content available on the internets I plan to watch MSNBC. Chris Matthews can be hard to digest and Russert comes across as way too serious when paired with Keith O. but it works. CNN’s coverage is overly contrived and they still think Bill Bennet makes a good addition to their panel.

Record Setting Rudy

Rotten Rudy 2008 the presidential candidate may have dropped out of the race but not before accomplishing something of note.

As reported in the LA Times and carried by TPM Rudy spent an eye popping $48.8 million for his one prized delegate. Now that's sound fiscal management we could have used in the White House.

John Bows Out, Rudy Cracks Up

Even though I expected it I was bummed to see John Edwards drop out of the presidential race. His populist message and calls to address poverty were inspiring to some. His message of helping the poor in America was also about changing the economic landscape that has been tilted against the middle class for some time. There was of course wide spread opining as to why this message did not catch fire with primary voters. It makes you wonder if things would have played out differently if states like Ohio had been moved up in the primary schedule.

Just when I was feeling blue I got a slight pick-me-up seeing Rudy throwing in the towel today. His fall from the top of the national polls is one of the intriguing stories of the 2008 election. Apparently the more you learn about him the less you like him. He took the fifty state strategy and turned it into the one state strategy. Not a good idea. The other silver lining is Rudy's endorsement of McCain. That act alone should make right-wing radio nation jittery all over again.

Uncle Fred Gets the Job Done

It was no real surprise that Fred Thompson dropped out of the presidential race. He exited the race the same way he entered it, seemingly confused and lacking energy. Maybe he realized that many of us were not convinced he was an admiral on an aircraft carrier.

With McCain's trajectory locked in towards the GOP nomination it was time for Fred to pull the plug. It's no secret Uncle Fred is a friend and ally of McCain, he did endorse him in the 2000 presidential race. I subscribe to the theory that he was only in the race to peel away votes from Rudy to give McCain some breathing room. With McCain gaining momentum it was time for Fred to go. Maybe he'll be on the short list for VP.

If you don't think Team McCain has gained steam just read David Brooks' Column in today's NY Times. He points out that McCain is bucking the GOP establishment (what a maverick) and lassoing a wide range of support from conservative voters. BoBo even thinks the GOP has resurrected its chances of holding onto the White House.
